Discover Boating Hands-On Skills Training

Powerboating and sailing workshops

Location: Marina del Rey
Nothing beats hands on experience when it comes to improving your boating skills and learning new ones. This year, let Discover Boating add more fun and excitement to your boat show experience and take your boating skills up a notch. There’s something for everyone—from absolute beginners to seasoned skippers!

Learn from experts; all sessions are taught by USCG licensed captains who are professional, certified instructors.

Space is very limited. Advance registration is highly recommended. Participants who register online will receive FREE boat show admission ($15 value) for the day. You may also register for workshops at the Discover Boating Resource Center during the boat show on a space available basis.

Fred's Shed Interactive Learning Center

Watch, learn and do! If you're a do-it-yourselfer or boat owner interested in maintaining, repairing or upgrading your boat or motor, head to Fred's Shed for free seminars and workshops. Daily sessions will cover a variety of topics, and include demos and question/answer sessions. Certified marine service technician "Fred" brings more than 35 years boating and marine service experience to the Shed.

    Stop by for professional, practical advice, participate in hands-on clinics, ask questions, and see the cutaway boat and motor. It's all FREE, compliments of the Progressive® Insurance Los Angeles Boat Show®.

NEW! Float-In Theater

We’re putting boating on the big screen to celebrate our 60th anniversary!

Location: L.A. Convention Center

Drive-in theaters may be a thing of the past, but at this year’s show we’re bringing one back—with a twist. Instead of watching the big screen from the front seat of a car, you’ll be relaxing on deck in a boat.
Head to the Float-In Theater to watch a variety of boating videos, see exciting race and tournament footage, learn about new boats, products and technology, discover great places to boat and hear personal boating stories.

NEW! Test Your Boating Skills—United States Power Squadrons® Boating Skills Virtual Trainer
Location: L.A. Convention Center

Take the helm of a virtual boat to practice basic boating maneuvers and improve your boating skills - without leaving dry land. The United States Power Squadrons® new Boating Skills Virtual Trainer makes learning fun! It features a steering wheel and a real Mercury throttle you use to “drive” a 20-console boat on a lake with other powerboats, sailboats, navigation aids and a marina.

Training options include close quarters maneuvering, docking and more. Instructors can adjust current and wind direction and velocity, and day/night settings to vary the degree of difficulty and challenge you whatever your skill level.

Free Sailing Lesson—Sailing Simulator

Location: Marina del Rey
Presented by: American Sailing Association (ASA)

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to pilot a sailboat, here is your chance to find out—without leaving dry land! Climb aboard the Sailing Simulator and discover how fun and easy it is to sail. Built for training, the sailing simulator is designed to offer a true-to-life sailing experience. Crew from the American Sailing Association will teach you how to tack and jibe and use the tiller to keep the boat level as fans fill the sails and move the boat from side to side.

Kids' Zone

The boat show is fun for your entire crew! Activities to entertain little mariners include:

  • Shark Escape inflatable slide—Monstrous fun! Brave young guests can climp up into an enormous great white shark and slide out through its jaws.
  • Balloon art—Stop by and watch as balloon artists twist, bend, and shape balloons into animals, headwear and other fun shapes.

Grab a bite to eat from the gourmet food trucks "docked" at Marina del Rey in-water location. Food trucks offerings will vary by day.
