Tides are Turning: 2014 Progressive Insurance Los Angeles Boat Show Highlights Billion Dollar Recreational Boating Business
With marine retail expenditures increasing, the recreational boating industry is seeing first significant signs of post-recession recovery

LOS ANGELES (December 26, 2013) – Americans are taking to the water in record numbers, with more than 88 million Americans participating in boating in 2012, a six percent increase over 2011. Additionally, recreational boating retail expenditures (new and pre-owned boats and engines, trailers, accessories and services including fuel, repair, storage, insurance, taxes) increased 10 percent in 2012 to $35.6 billion, demonstrating the first significant post-recession recovery for the industry.

Echoing the nationwide trend, total sales for new power boats, engines, trailers and accessories in California were up 17.3 percent in 2012 at $367 million. The 2014 Progressive Insurance Los Angeles Boat Show, taking place Feb. 6-9 and produced by the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA), is set to continue the positive sales momentum for the boating industry and businesses throughout Los Angeles and California.

“Boating supports more than 25,000 jobs in California, with those numbers continuing to climb. In Los Angeles alone, there are nearly 80,000 recreational boats and more than 480 boating businesses,” said Dave Geoffroy, VP, Executive Director, NMMA West.  “The Progressive Insurance Los Angeles Boat Show not only serves as a one-stop-shop for consumers to buy the newest boats and marine accessories, boosting sales for businesses; it also provides people with a chance to experience the benefits of the boating lifestyle, which we hope will ultimately get more people on the water and boating for generations.”

At the 2014 boat show, attendees can compare and shop hundreds of boats of all sizes and price points from sport fishing vessels, brokerage yachts, and pontoons to ski boats, personal watercrafts, and cruisers, plus take advantage of free learning opportunities in a classroom-like setting or on the water, and enjoy a variety of family-friendly nautical activities.
