Marina del Rey: Discover Boating Hands-On Skills Training (Powerboat)

POWERBOATS

Nothing beats hands-on experience when it comes to improving your skills and learning new ones.
This year’s show features a full schedule of one-hour and three-hour hands-on, in-water powerboating workshops designed to add more fun and excitement to your boat show experience… and take your boating skills up a notch. There’s something for everyone - from absolute beginners to seasoned skippers!

Space is very limited. Advance registration is highly recommended. Participants who pre-register online will receive FREE admission ($12,- value) for Los Angeles Boat Show the day. Participants may also register for Clinics and Seminars at the Discover Boating Resource Center during the boat show on a space available basis.

All sessions are based on internationally recognized training and certification programs and are taught by USCG licensed captains who are also certified professional instructors. You'll learn skills that will last a lifetime.

The Powerboat workshops will be offered in partnership with BoatU.S. Free BoatU.S. Membership will be provided to each participant along with a 10% discount on annual on water services subscription (including fuel, towing, battery service, etc).

ONE HOUR POWERBOAT WORKSHOPS

ESSENTIAL BOATING SAFETY - Presented Dockside
Airline pilots wouldn’t dream of taking off without performing a thorough pre-flight check of the aircraft. In this session participants will learn how professional boat captains conduct a pre-departure, voyage-critical systems, a post voyage checkout procedure and more. All participants will receive a reusable, laminated copy of the specially designed pre-departure checklist to take home. For skippers and crew of all experience levels. FIRST MATE SKILLS – Presented Dockside

Competent crewmembers that know their way around the boat make the skipper look like a pro at the marina and will always get invited back. This session covers the essential skills required of a top-notch first mate including those that make docking and undocking drama free and uneventful. These sessions are for crewmembers (and skippers) of all skill levels. For more info and to register HERE

BASIC CLOSE QUARTERS MANEUVERING SKILLS – On Water
Participants will learn how to handle the boat in tight spaces and maneuver close to piers, docks and fixed objects with confidence. For newcomers and those who want to polish their skills under the guidance of a professional captain. For more info and to register HERE

ANCHORING AND MULTI-VESSEL RAFTING TECHNIQUES – On Water
The Prospect of anchoring overnight can create anxiety for even the most experienced boaters. The skills taught in this session will help you get a better night’s sleep at anchor including how to prepare for heavy winds and managing a dragging anchor, rafting up with other vessels and more. OPEN WATER BOAT HANDLING & SEAMANSHIP – On Water
Helmsmanship - the ability to steer and handle a boat well —can’t be learned from a book or in a classroom. In this session you’ll take the helm to learn skills needed to be a confident boat operator including: how to use trim tabs and the engine tilt/trim feature to balance the boat correctly, handling large waves and wakes safely and more. THREE HOUR POWERBOAT WORKSHOPS

ADVANCED DOCKING & PRECISION BOAT CONTROL IN TIGHT SPACES - On Water
How to Make your Boat Do Exactly What you Want it to do.
If you’ve ever felt anxious or intimidated in challenging docking situations, this program is just what the doctor ordered. Taught by experts in the art of close quarters maneuvering, this session will show you How to make your boat do EXACTLY what you want it to do. This 3 hour workshop is designed for experienced boat operators regardless of boat size or propulsion type.... the techniques and principles are universal and can be adapted to any vessel. We can’t guarantee you’ll never be intimidated again but even the most experienced skippers will learn new skills that will measurably improve both confidence and ability. POWERBOATING MADE EASY - On Water
If you are hesitant to take your boat out when the weather looks even a little “iffy,” this program was designed for you. This 3-hour workshop is taught entirely onboard while underway by a USCG licensed and certified professional instructor. Participants will gain practical hands-on experience to increase ability and confidence resulting in greater boating safety and enjoyment. Powerboating Made Easy is ideal for new boaters as well as experienced boaters who want to improve skills and confidence under the guidance of a professional captain. Participants may also register for Clinics and Seminars at the Discover Boating Resource Center during the boat show on a space available basis.

Learn From the Experts:
All underway exercises are taught by professional Certified Instructors aboard 30’ to 40’cruising sailboats. The registration fee for each session is $50,- in advance or $75,- at the show. Admission to the show is FREE with advance registration.

Fundamental Sailing SkillsAre you new to Sailing (or just a little rusty)?
Learn how easy and fun sailing is by participating in this on water learning event that covers basic skills.All learning elements are based on proven sail training curriculum and are taught aboard 30’ to 40’ sailing vessels. During these 2-hour sessions you’ll learn how to raise, lower and trim the sails, steering techniques and helmsman ship, how to turn, slow and stop the boat including how to tack and jibe, and more.

Essential Cruising & Charter Skills
For sailors of all experience levels.Instructors will focus on important skills for extended coastal cruising or bare boat chartering in unfamiliar waters. These three hour sessions include how to heave to, reef the sails, balancing the boat in building wind and seas (lee helm vs. weather helm), sail trim techniques for optimizing performance. There will also be exercises for anchoring and picking up a mooring ball including how to rig a bridle to prevent chafe, snubbing the anchor to absorb shock created by waves and wind, how to quickly correct a dragging anchor and more.

These hands on learning events are designed for those who are physically able to participate as an active crew member while underway. Crew members under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Boat show admission is FREE with advance registration. For more info and to register HERE

New for SailFest 2015—ASA: New Sailor Workshop

This exciting new workshop is designed with new sailors in mind. It begins with a 30-minute interactive educational seminar at the Sailing Simulator where you will learn the basics of sailing and take your turn at the tiller safely on land. You will then board the ASA First 22, the American Sailing Association’s new training sailboat, for an in-depth 90-minute sailing lesson with an ASA-certified instructor. This workshop is designed to educate, excite and equip those with little to no sailing experience with basic sailing skills.

With only four classes per day, holding a maximum of four slots each, availability is extremely limited.
